In this edition of “Mondays with Matt”, we talked about using fertilizer, and what time of the year is best to apply it. You may be surprised to hear Matt’s answer!
Fertilizer helps to accelerate the healing process, so many lawn care companies choose to fertilize in the spring. However, you may not need to fertilize in spring because of the amount of natural growth taking place—particularly in the north, where you have freezing and thawing cycles. These conditions help promote a natural release where adequate moisture gives way to healthy grass.
In Matt’s opinion, if you’re only doing one application, use fertilizer in the fall. If you plan to do 2-3 applications, then you can space it out over the course of the year.
Remember, soil is living—there’s microbial action in the soil where microbes are ingesting nutrients. This is why it’s important to fertilize at the right times and not just “fertilize to fertilize”.
