RYAN® Turf Renovation Equipment History

1940s – Originally founded by Gordon Kindlien and Earl Nystrom in 1946, Ryan® began as the K&N machine shop in Kindlien’s backyard. The pair had a desire to strike out after the war and establish a high quality general machine shop. By the end of 1947, the company had a firm stronghold in the machining and tooling business. In 1948, K&N purchased a small manufacturing company affiliated with a commercial landscaper named Art Ryan. The team produced a new sod cutter that was durable enough to give years of trouble-free service. Art Ryan suggested the “Ryan Sod Buster” as a name for the new product and the name stuck. Even today you might be able to find one of these originals still in use. After more than 60 years the name and brand carry the ideals that the company was built on – heavy-duty, commercially built and long-lasting turf equipment.

1950s – With sales increasing, and customers requesting not to sell to their competitors, Ryan® incorporated on September 8, 1950. Ryan started introducing new products in 1953 and added a lawn groomer, an edger and a sod trimmer. In 1956, Ryan introduced what is now known as the Ryan Jr. Sod Cutter. 1957 proved that Ryan machines were a worldwide success as the company started shipping product to Europe and established distributors overseas.

1960s – By 1960, Ryan® had new distributors selling products like the Renovaire®, the Rollaire® and the Ren-O-Thin®. Ryan had established a more complete line of turf renovation products and it continued to be the industry leader. 1970s – During this period, Ryan® brought products to the market that filled the needs of commercial landscapers, renters and users all over the world. Through the 70s, Ryan increased its product offering by 25% with increases that were close to doubling every year.

1980s – The 80s proved to be a high growth period with sales that could not be imaged in the early years. With all of the industry standards and manufacturing expertise added to the Ryan® line, a renewed excitement grew within the company as it strengthened its position as the premier turf renovation equipment supplier.

1990s-Today – Ryan® has updated the product line to bring to you its current line of durable, dependable sod cutters, aerators, dethatchers, overseeders and other specialty products. We are the industry-leading product group that still stands behind the quality promise we made 60 years ago. So get out and pull more profits with the most trusted name in turf – Ryan.
